These Gurkha trousers come in a straight fit with a high rise that sit on your natural waist (at your belly button) with a 1.5 inch to 2 inch turnups/ cuffs at the bottom of the pants for a clean and classic drape.
The trousers have a really clean look with no belt loops and a wide belt line with side adjusters to adjust the waist of the pants on the go!
These Navy Gurkha trouser are not your typical Navy trousers or like any other high-rise pants as they come with a double forward pleat at the front to give you a more aesthetic and pleasing silhouette that provides you with some comfort and extra room when moving about and sitting down in the trousers.
Because of the classic Navy color, birds eye pattern and a simple design, these trousers can easily serve as an alternative for your jeans! They are really versatile when it comes to styling them and can be easily paired form anything like a simple T shirt all the way to a formal Blazer or Jacket.
The origin of the Gurkha Trousers
Like any classic menswear pieces that never go out of style, even the Gurkha trouser has it’s origin in the military. This high rise trouser was designed for comfort and mobility in rugged terrain for the elite Nepalese regiments of the then British army – The Gurkha or Gorkha regiment.
The pants feature a high rise cut, double pleats for room and movement and side buckle closure in order to hold up the pants without requiring a belt or suspender, making the Gurkha trouser an extremely functional piece of equipment in the soldier’s arsenal.
The most fascinating part about the design of the Gurkha trouser is the wide waistline without any belt loops on the trousers, which gives the illusion of wearing a cummerbund which in turn gives a really pleasing and slimming silhouette to the wearer.
In the humid terrains of South and Southeast Asia, it was not always possible to wear the usual military gear like the Trench coat, waist coats etc. in which you could hang and carry your weapons and ammunitions, hence these trousers were designed in such a way where you could store your sidearm and still be comfortable and breathable in warm and humid climates.
The use of Merino Wool in our Gurkha trousers
Now let’s talk a little bit about the fabric that we have used for making our Navy Merino Gurkha trousers.
The specific fabric that we have chosen for our trouser is a Super 140s Australian Merino Wool sourced from the esteemed Italian Mill-Vercelli. Now, Merino Wool is itself a very luxurious fabric for use in a garment, on top of that Australian Merino Wool is the best and finest in the world!
If you were wondering “Why are these trousers so expensive?”, well I hope that you have your answer now. It’s the fabric plus the superior level of craftsmanship on the trouser. If you look at the pictures and the clean lines and cut on the trouser, you will easily be able to judge the high level of craftsmanship that was involved in making these trousers.
Now let’s also understand why Merino Wool is a great fabric choice for any garment:
- Keeps you both cool and warm: The unique part about Merino Wool is the fact that it has a very unique quality of keeping you warm when the temperatures drop and cool when the temperatures go up, making it the most versatile fabric in terms of temperature regulation. You could use this fabric not only in the humid climate of India but also the rugged cold terrains of Europe. Bedouin nomads have been using Merino Wool to survive in the fluctuating temperatures of the dessert.
- It can be fine but still drape neatly: This is another distinguishing feature of Merino Wool. It can be extremely fine and lightweight but still drape like a dream, unlike other fabrics like cotton, linen etc. Henceforth, Merino Wool is one of the most popular choices for year-round garments and classic menswear pieces like Blazers and our very own Navy Gurkha trousers.
- It is extremely durable: Unlike Linen or cotton that creases a lot or is prone to ripping under extreme stress, Merino Wool is extremely durable which is why it is an appropriate choice for any of your “First garments” like your “First Blazer” or your “First Trouser”. It is extremely long lasting and travels really well!
Why the color Navy for our Merino Wool Gurkha trouser?
Navy is a classic color that should be in any man’s wardrobe. In fact, in my opinion as a Personal Stylist, it should be the first choice for a Suit, Blazer or trouser in a gentleman’s Wardrobe. Unlike Black, it’s not achromatic which means it would be hard to match it with other colors.
And unlike Pastels, it’s not very bright. It’s the perfect in between mute tone which you can match with almost any other color.
As you can see on the above compilation, our Navy Gurkha Trousers can be styled with almost about anything, whether it be an overshirt, a denim jacket or just a simple Dress shirt.
The possibilities of styling a Navy trouser like this are endless. If you want a matching Jacket with this trouser, you can also browse our Super 140s Navy Blazer below.
