Do you really need a Personal Stylist as a Man? The short answer is no. But the long answer is well, complicated!
You need to ask yourself three main questions:
- Are you satisfied with your current wardrobe?
- The Way you dress currently, does it match your current self-image or the man you see yourself to be in another five, ten or fifteen years?
- Are you willing to make a lot of mistakes in your wardrobe and invest a huge amount of time and money in those mistakes?
Trust me, the third point will happen to you if you decide to work on your wardrobe and styling skills by yourself and also know that there is nothing specifically wrong with that approach. It happened with me also, you can see it on the above timeline pic that I have shared.
If you see the pic that I have shared above. My very own Style journey started in 2018. I had no one to mentor me.
I only had some generalist advice from some online Influencers to depend on, with no real idea of what really worked for my specific body type and what aesthetic I should go for?
As a result, it took me around five to six years almost to get to where I am today. I know exactly what colors I should go for to compliment a specific skin tone, what kind of silhouette will look good on a particular body type and much more when it comes to Menswear Styling.
But in the process, I ended up cluttering and wasting my money on my Wardrobe with a lot of Pieces and Items that I did not really need and ended up just throwing them out.
But one thing is for sure, you do not really need a Personal Stylist to find your own style. Though, a stylist will definitely be able to speed up your Style Journey and help you save up a lot of time, energy and money on building the right wardrobe for you and styling yourself intentionally.

Misconception 1: It takes a huge budget to hire your own Personal Stylist
This is one of the biggest misconceptions that I see people have when it comes to hiring a Personal Stylist in India. Most people think that they need to have a huge budget upwards of lakhs if not thousands of rupees to hire their own Personal Stylist.
But there can be nothing further from the truth.Â
Personal Stylists whether it be for men or women come in all kinds of different budgets. You just only need to look a little harder.
It’s just like purchasing any other commodity or product.
Let’s take the example of a car!
For e.g. If you are someone that wants to buy a car and have a budget of less than 2 lakhs. Then you could go for the TATA Nano.

This is a big one! And I kind of understand where this comes from.

- Going off the rack.
- Going custom (made to measure) or bespoke.
When you go off the rack in terms of a suit, then it is very rarely going to fit you perfectly off the rack unless you were the model based on whom the pattern of the suit was cut.
An off the rack suit is made in such a way that it can accommodate most body types.
You are likely going to need a few alterations and even after that it is very highly likely it will not age the best in your wardrobe because of the machine-made features.
On the other hand, if you go the made to measure or bespoke route. You will have something that is designed only to fit your specific body.
And if you go bespoke then you will even have a custom pattern made only for you, which means that the suit will only fit your unique curves and crevices.
Not just that in the custom-made process, you will also develop a deep relationship with your tailor who will know all your unique needs and preferences.

A woman will style you from a sense of the Female Gaze which can be beneficial in certain circumstances, but for the most part you will be better off with a male stylist as a man, trust me on that!
For the same reason also, I would never advice a woman to get styled by a Male stylist because he will style you more from a Male Gaze.
I myself refuse a lot of opportunities to work as a Personal Stylist for women for the same reason. Not only that but I work mostly with men, so I won’t do much of a great job!
In the same way, a female stylist no matter how well accomplished and experienced she is, if she works mostly with women then you are better off working with a Male Personal Stylist for your wardrobe and styling needs. Trust me on that!
